Sebastian, FL Secures Historic Waterfront, Preserving the Heart of Our Fishing Village
There are moments in a town’s story that feel bigger than a transaction.
Sebastian’s commitment to preserving a 1.3-acre stretch of historic waterfront along Indian River Drive is one of those moments.
After thoughtful conversations and careful planning, the City of Sebastian has partnered with the Sembler family to secure this prime piece of waterfront property — ensuring it remains dedicated to commercial fishing and aquaculture for generations to come. The total investment of nearly $1.7 million, supported by a $1.04 million grant from the Florida Communities Trust along with city funds, reflects a shared belief in protecting the very essence of our community.
A Living, Working Waterfront
This property is home to Treasure Coast Shellfish, led by oyster farmer Nicolette Mariano and her team — a vibrant example of what a true working waterfront looks like today. Boats dock. Oysters are harvested. The lagoon is stewarded. It’s not just history — it’s happening in real time.
City leaders have made it clear: this is about keeping the waterfront active, authentic, and purposeful.
The Sembler family, long respected in Indian River County’s fishing culture, have always envisioned this land remaining rooted in its maritime legacy. This agreement honors that vision beautifully.
Sebastian has always proudly embraced its identity as a fishing village along the Indian River Lagoon. The working waterfront isn’t just scenic — it’s foundational. It supports local livelihoods, sustainable aquaculture, tourism, and the character that draws people here in the first place.
As a local Realtor, I’m deeply invested in more than just property values. I’m invested in the way of life here. In the sunrise boat launches. In the oyster beds that help restore our lagoon. In the small businesses that reflect generations of heritage.
Celebrating milestones like this matters because it protects what makes Sebastian special.
Because when we protect the way of living, we protect the property values too.
Preserving authentic spaces like this waterfront safeguards community identity, strengthens long-term economic stability, and reinforces the very reasons people choose to call Sebastian home.
This partnership reflects thoughtful leadership, collaboration, and a shared long-term vision. It shows that growth and preservation can coexist — and that protecting working waterfronts is part of building a strong, vibrant future.
For those of us who call Sebastian home, this feels like a win for the soul of our town.
And that’s something worth celebrating.
